Pasture weeds of the tropics and subtropics with special reference to Australia

Biology and ecology of weeds

Part of the book series: Geobotany ((GEOB,volume 2))

Abstract

Weeds and weediness are concepts that many people have attempted to define. Harlan and de Wet (1965), in addressing themselves to this problem, were unable to reach a satisfactory consensus. They did conclude there is ‘something biologically intimate about weeds and man’, that many weeds exist only in the presence of man, but are also perceived in the mind of man, i.e. a plant, once having been considered a weed, remains one, even in conditions where it is not really a weed. Baker (1965) recognises weeds basically in this latter context, i.e. plants which ‘grow entirely or predominantly in situations markedly disturbed my man’, and he uses two categories of situation viz. agrestals (weeds of arable land) and ruderals (weeds of waste places). Holzner (1978) considers weeds in these situations but also adds a third category of ‘in natural vegetation, from which they [weeds] originate or into which they have been able to invade’. This last category is of considerable importance in the ecology of pasture weeds because it is both the source and the refuge of many weeds. Adams and Baker (1962) have also recognised this in their account of weeds of cultivation and grazing lands in Ghana. In fact their account provides a very good basis for considering weeds in tropical and subtropical pastures and grazing lands.
