Barriers to Increasing Crop Productivity by Genetic Improvement in Photosynthesis

  • Chapter
Progress in Photosynthesis Research

Abstract

After several decades of effort there has, to my knowledge, been no cultivar released in which any photosynthetic attribute has been successfully incorporated to increase productivity. In this review reasons for the failure are examined but, for want of space, I do not address the major confounding influence of partitioning of biological productivity into commercial yield (1,2). I consider just the relationship between photosynthetic attributes and biological productivity.
