Abstract
In high power pulse technology, various types of controlled electrical gas discharges, such as those used in high power lasers, are in a continuing state of evaluation. Controlled electrical discharges, however, may also be of use in other systems as opening switches in electromagnetic mass drivers. Electron beam guns have, therefore, been conceived and developed for many of these purposes since about 1970. Both thermionic and cold cathode systems have been constructed and investigated [1,2, 3,4]. These cover a large range of moderate to high electron beam current densities. Thermionic guns are mainly applied at low current densities below 1 A/cm2. Considerably higher densities, up to several tens to hundreds of A/cm2, are attained with cold cathode guns. Voltages usually range from several hundreds to several thousands of kV.
