Abstract
A fully functional hrpM gene of the hrpM locus of Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae is required for expression of brown spot disease symptoms in susceptible bean cultivars. orf1 and hrpM genes of the hrpM locus have considerable homology with mdoG and mdoH, respectively, of the mdoA locus of Escherichia coli. The mdoA locus is essential for the synthesis of membrane-derived oligosaccharides found in the periplasmic space. A new, revised genetic organisation of orf1 and hrpM is presented based on additional nucleotide sequencing and comparative homologies with the mdoA locus. The function of hrpM is inferred based on genetic complementation of the hrpM mutation with the mdoA locus.
