Abstract
The mitigation of environmental and economic impacts of drought events requires the development of adequate management strategies and the education and training of the relevant decision-makers and managers as well as of the general society. This paper highlights the specific nature of drought as compared to other natural disasters and discusses educational and institutional strategies for coping with droughts. It concludes with a set of recommendations for the development of an efficient drought policy in Europe.
