Abstract

Operations in the Arctic have to cope with seasonal sea ice, old multi-year ice, icebergs and ice islands. The oil industry has carried out a large amount of research to quantify the hazards due to these features and now builds structures to withstand them. Underwater operations in Arctic regions have to recognize the risks of cold and damage by moving ice features but the problems are not insuperable.
