Abstract

The Trace Gas Analyser (TGA) uses photo-acoustic infra-red spectroscopy to measure the N2O concentration in a gas sample. In association with soil enclosures, this fully portable device allows in-field N2O flux measurements. The accuracy of photo-acoustic infra-red spectroscopy (PAIRS) for N2O analysis was tested by comparing PAIRS analysis with GC analysis of both standard N2O gases and of head-space samples taken from soil enclosures. In addition, the CO2 interference on N2O analysis by PAIRS was investigated by analysing N2O/CO2 gas mixtures. Photo-acoustic infra-red spectroscopy accurately measured the N2O concentration of standard gases. The CO2 interference on N2O analysis by PAIRS was linear and the average CO2 correction factor was 4.2 × 10-4. There was some discrepancy between flux measurements using GC and PAIRS, which might be due to cross contamination between the soil enclosures.
