Abstract

The presence of Cd (control, 0.15, 1.50 and 15.0 mg Cd L−1) in the growing medium of two maize cultivars (Dekalb XL 72 AA and Paolo) lead to a decrease in the NO3¯ content in plant tissues. As a consequence, there was a loss of nitrate reductase activity. The results of a shock treatment with 15 mg Cd L−1 (after 24 h) and the assesment of the effect of Cd on the nitrate reductase de novo synthesis and stability suggest that Cd influences on the NO3¯ root uptake and translocation to the shoot, thereafter nitrate reductase activity loss.
