Abstract
Elsewhere in this volume, the importance of Rhizobium-derived lipochitin oligosaccharide Nod factors has been described. While Nod factors appear to be sufficient to induce many of the early events in nodule morphogenesis (Long, 1996), additional host-symbiont recognition systems are apparently required to promote tissue and cell invasion (van Spronsen et al., 1994; Vrjn et al., 1995). These processes have been most extensively studied for alfalfa (Benaben et al., 1995), clover (de Boer and Djordjevic, 1995) and pea (Kijne, 1992;Rae et al., 1992).
