Abstract

The classical definition of a prokaryote is encapsulated in the word itself (prokaryote, from the Greek for “before nucleus”), and refers to the simple cell structure that lacks a nucleus, along with compartmentalization and specialization of the cytoplasm. This fundamental feature of prokaryotic cells has been challenged by the finding that some prokaryotes exhibit cellular organization resembling that of eukaryotic cells. The most prominent example is that of Gemmata obscuriglobus, an aquatic microorganism that has been shown to possess membrane-bounded nuclear material (Fuerst and Webb, 1991). In relatives of Gemmata obscuriglobus (members of the order Planctomycetales), cellular compartmentalization, in which the ribosomes are separated from the rest of the cell, has been reported (Lindsay et al., 1997).
