Expert’s Interface in a Generator of Process Supervision Systems: Relational Management of an Object-Oriented Knowledge

  • Chapter
Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Engineering VI

Abstract

When supervising a process, an operator uses two kinds of reasoning strategies, task-dependent (domain-free) or domain-dependent. The RONSART extended object-oriented model, the core of a generator of process supervision expert systems, aims at modeling the domain-free reasoning involved in supervision. Generating such a system using this specific generator consists essentially of acquiring the process-dependent knowledge, according to the model provided by RONSART. An interface, for the expert to use in building a system with the generator, was developed. Its goal was to provide a friendly environment for knowledge acquisition and mechanisms for managing the knowledge base and checking for its consistency with the RONSART model. This interface was implemented with a relational data base management system. The design of the relational knowledge base has used the object-oriented model as the information’s conceptual schema. The attributes of the specific object features, such as inheritance, and the coherence of the knowledge base with the RONSART model have been implemented through dynamic integrity constraints.
