Abstract

Soll [1] has recently reviewed the pathogenesis of gastric and duodenal ulcers caused by NSAIDs. These drugs, their prodrugs or enteric coated formulations damage the stomach and duodenum directly or indirectly (systemically). They share at least one common pharmacological property, namely, inhibition of cyclo-oxygenase, and it is by this mechanism that they reduce the ability of the mucosa to produce those prostaglandins which play a pivotal role in mucosal defence. The specific pathological pathways by which damage is induced remain speculative.
