Abstract

Symptoms of decline in forests have been seen during last 20 years in most industrialized countries. These symptoms have been related to different kinds of pollution (5,7). However, in most cases, we do not even have a widely accepted methodology for recognizing decline (6).

This study is concerned with the effects of atmospheric pollution on forest mechanisms in an area near Bilbao (Northern Spain). We have investigated the influence of pollution on needle production with the time in planted forests of Pinus radiata D. Don.
