Abstract

The western Mediterranean Basin is covered to a great extent by coppice stands (Quercus ilex, Castanea sativa,...). According to most of the authors, these coppice stands would be the result of a long-standing human activity, the present main species being generally not the same as the original main species before action of man (e.g. the original Q. pubescens has been replaced, according to the environment, by Q. ilex or C. sativa).
