Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to prove that the elasto-plastic idealization of the behaviour for the materials of a reinforced concrete beam under multiaxial loading leads to a substantial amount of error.

In order to get a broad set of results, three elasto-plastic steels were designed (high, medium and light strength) and, similarly, three elasto-plastic concretes.

The actual case is a combination of given steel and concrete, A total of nine combinations of idealized materials is possible which results in nine additional idealized cases which are discussed and compared with the actual case.

A series of calculations was performed, for each of these ten cases, considering pure bending and two different values of the normal force, namely the limits of the load range which is assumed to act on the actual structures.
