Abstract
The results are presented of a test program to investigate the performance of sheet gaskets in steam at elevated temperatures. Two types of ANSI B16.5 joints were used, Class 600 ferritic and Class 2500 austenitic, both of 100mm nominal size. Materials included CAF as a control but were otherwise non-asbestos materials, including bonded Aramid™ fibre, bonded glass-fibre, andexfoliated graphite. The effects of bolt load was investigated. It was found that much higher loads were required than those used for joint design in the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code. Thinner gaskets also performed better than thicker ones. Results are presented in the form of performance maps in relation to joint Class ratings.
