The framework concept and the hydrological landscape structure: a new perspective in the design of multifunctional landscapes

Abstract

Processes with a conflicting nature, expressing incompatible goals in society, cause fundamental problems in multifunctional landscapes (Kerkstra and Vrijlandt, 1990; Sijmons, 1990; Van Buuren et al., 1991). Some types of land use, such as modem agriculture, demand rapid adjustments of the physical landscape structure to technical innovation and changing market conditions. Other types require sustainable environmental conditions, continuity in space and time and hence long-term planning (e.g. nature development and water supply). The traditional landscape structure is too tight to host intensive and rapid agricultural developments. Consequently the ecological integrity of the landscape is threatened (De Molenaar, 1980; Anonymous, 1985; Anonymous, 1987; Weinreich and Musters, 1989; Brouwer et al., 1991) disrupting the relationship between the landscape pattern and the underlying natural physical structure (Buitenhuis et al., 1986; Kerkstra and Vrijlandt, 1988; Meeus et al., 1988; De Regt, 1989; Van Buuren et al., 1991).
