Abstract

South of Poole Harbour, lying between it and the sea, is an area of dunes, lakes and marsh called Studland Heath. The dunes are some of the best on the south coast, forming four main ridges, one of which (No. 4) has developed since a comprehensive survey made in the 1930s. The earlier ridges formed between 1607 and 1721 (No. 1), 1721 and 1849 (No. 2) and 1849 and 1933 (No. 3). They all trend a little east of north, parallel to the coastline, and are separated by low marshy tracts and ponds. These are typical foredunes, formed on the beach, at the shoreline, and blown a short distance inland.
