Abstract

The interaction of a metal tip with a metal surface is investigated in terms of the known theory of metal adhesion and experimentally by means of force-gradient sensing with scanning tunneling microscopy. Experimental results are presented for the interaction of an Ir tip with an Ir surface, and atomic-scale resolution capability is demonstrated in the attractive force regime. Furthermore, we show experimental evidence for adhesion-promoted, entropy-driven local disordering.
