Abstract

The sequence of bifurcations from simple to complex forms of fluid motion can be studied numerically in the case of systems with high degrees of external symmetries. The relevance of tertiary and quartemary states for the problem of turbulence is discussed and as an example asymmetric traveling wave convection in a fluid layer heated from below is described.
