Abstract

This is a review of recent work on the underwater sound generated by rainfall. A brief history of the subject is followed by a discussion of the different ways in which a drop impact can produce sound and the relevance of each mechanism to rain noise. Experimental details are omitted for the sake of brevity. It is concluded that the most important mechanism is the entrainment of bubbles. The known properties of bubble sounds are used to predict the spectrum which we should expect for rain noise; the results agree well with published measurements.
