Adherence and internalization of H. pylori by epithelial cells

  • Chapter
Helicobacter pylori

Abstract

The Gram-negative bacterium, currently referred to as Helicobacter pylori 1, is now firmly established as a human pathogen causing chronic-active gastritis2. H. pylori infection fulfils each of Koch’s postulates as a cause of chronic—active gastritis3 since orogastric challenge of humans4,5 and experimental animals6 results in the development of gastritis. Therapy which clears the bacterial infection results in healing of the associated gastritis7. There is specificity to H. pylori infection because other causes of gastritis, including drug ingestion (i.e. non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents and corticosteroids), gastroduodenal Crohn’s disease, and eosinophilic gastroenteritis are not correlated with H. pylori colonization of the gastric mucosa8–10.
