Abstract
This chapter does not aim to provide a comprehensive coverage of methods for the study of scuttle flies. Numerous books on ecological methods are now available. In any research programme it is problems that are the primary focus of attention. Methods employed by others for other studies may or may not be suitable. Particular problems frequently require novel methods or adaptations of those used before in other studies. My aim, in the notes below, is to draw attention to some methods that have been employed in the study of Phoridae. Hopefully these will at least provide a point for departure. A section on the methods used to control pest species is also included.
All scientific work is easier with appropriate instrumental aids; some kinds of scientific work absolutely depend on particular instrumental aids. But science itself is an attitude, a method of thinking, not an accumulation of gadgets (Bates, 1950).
