Abstract
This chapter contains a general information about varieties and other axiomatizible classes of algebras. As before, we admit many-sorted algebras as well. We also consider several constructions which will be used in the sequel. Varieties play a significant role for databases: they are related with the idea of data type, one of which is of importance in programming theory.
