Abstract
In this lecture, I shall discuss two very exciting aspects of pediatric anesthesia: 1) the development of a scientific basis for the fasting interval for infants and children scheduled for surgery, and 2) premedications, old and new. Both aspects are pertinent to clinical pediatric anesthetic practice today because our understanding of these issues has changed dramatically in the past few years. As I outline below, the changes will reduce the unpleasantness of the hospital visit and the amount of suffering infants and children in our care will have to endure, while we maintain a very high standard of care.
