Abstract
The origin of Persian literature is shrouded in a dense mist that for a long time appeared to be impenetrable. That a remarkable insight into the subject has been obtained in recent years is the result of research, based on more or less fortuitous fragments or incidental references in ancient Arabic writers; further thanks to newly discovered records connected with the very earliest periods; and finally the improved methods used in examining the material we have inherited.
