Abstract
Among the Shī‹ites, i.e. nowadays particularly among the Persians, in many parts of Mesopotamia and in the districts of India that fall under the cultural influence of Islam, annual dramatic performances are held (or at any rate used to be held until very recently) portraying the death of ‹Alī and his sons Hasan and Husayn. According to Shī‹ites doctrine, of course, ‹Alī is the only legitimate successor to the Prophet.
