Recent Advances in Homogeneous Hydrogenation of Carbon-Carbon Multiple Bonds

Aspects of Homogeneous Catalysis

Part of the book series: Aspects of Homogeneous Catalysis ((AHCA,volume 1))

Abstract

Research into homogeneous catalysis has been stimulated by the belief that homogeneous catalysts can be designed which are more efficient than their heterogeneous counterparts. It has proved notoriously difficult to reproduce active surfaces, and it is believed that greater reproducibility, better control of catalyst poisons, and more specific catalysts can be obtained in homogeneous systems by suitable control of the ligands surrounding the active centre. It should also be possible to design more active catalysts in homogeneous systems as each metal atom, or ion, is potentially a catalyst, whereas in heterogeneous systems only certain surface sites are catalytically active.
