Supernovae and Supernova Remnants

Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 45))

Abstract

X-ray observations have resulted in much of the recent new information concerning supernova remnants. Observations have been made principally from sounding rockets carrying instruments with various spectral sensitivities over the range 0.1–10 keV. Two satellite instruments have also made important contributions; Uhuru which has provided greatly increased sky coverage and sensitivity above 2 keV, and the small area X-ray instrument aboard Copernicus which has provided greatly improved angular resolution below 1 keV. The X-ray observations have greatly expanded our knowledge of the physical conditions occurring in supernova remnants and have given us new insights into their evolution.
