Abstract
In these lectures I shall first review the basic problems of the energy supply to radio components and their containment (cf. Longair, Ryle and Scheuer 1973). Then I want to talk about models in which energy is transferred from the nucleus to the radio components by a relativistic beam (Rees 1971, Blandford and Rees 1974), and about the radio structures to which such models might lead (Scheuer 1974). I shall show some pictures of radio sources, which will illustrate how well or badly they fit the predicted structures, and indicate what modifications we should try to make in the models. Finally, I shall discuss an unsolved problem: can we make a relativistic beam stable enough to get from the nucleus to the extended components without spreading out over a broad angle?
