Abstract

Optical properties of nematic liquid crystals are considered. We analyze the light scattering by director fluctuations, the singularities of the single light scattering and extinction coefficients of the ordinary and extraordinary beams. The multiple light scattering is considered in the eikonal approximation and in the framework of radiation transfer equation for anisotropic media. This equation is analyzed in small angle and diffusion approximation. For multi-domain liquid crystals the effect of the coherent backscattering is discussed.
