Abstract
‘After the Atlas över växternas utbredning i Norden of Hultén (1950) and the Atlas of the British Flora of Perring & Walters (1962), the Atlas of the Belgian and Luxemburg Flora now also has appeared. Whoever reads in the preface that the researches to obtain the data for the atlas of our southern neighbours were focussed on the example of the Netherlanders Goethart and Jongmans, can scarcely suppress a feeling of justifiable jealousy about the achievement of Van Rompaey et al.’ Thus began a book review of the Belgian (and Luxemburg) atlas (Mennema, 1974a) which ended with the words: ‘In summary it may be said that our Belgian friends were faced with the same choice that we were, with their treasury of floristic information, collected by many who must find great satisfaction in seeing their inventory labors crowned with this publication. They made their choice and we ours. But the Belgian atlas exists, and the Atlas of the Netherlands Flora is yet to appear!’
