Abstract
From the human perspective, the highlands present a very severe environment. Most of its harshness can be traced to only two factors, atmospheric pressure and temperature. Both are much lower than in adjacent lowlands, and the pressure of the atmosphere is probably near the long-term low limit for the survival of men. Other factors also contribute to the inhospitability of the highlands, but they are mostly secondary results of the low temperatures and pressures of the air.
