Abstract
The land biota is an active compartment in the global carbon cycle, and transfers to and from the atmosphere are to be taken into account in sufficient detail in model calculations. Most probably, net losses of carbon of considerable size from some terrestrial ecosystems to the atmosphere are at present balanced by net gains of other ecosystems. Even for quite different assumptions regarding the behaviour of land ecosystems and the ocean, the future atmospheric CO2 increase will primarily depend on the quantities of fossil fuels burned.
