Abstract
The focus of the wide-ranging discussion throughout the workshop was the underlying concern, expressed by most of the participants, of how can the study of sex role expectations, attitudes and behaviors contribute to the development of healthy males and females. There was general agreement that the prevailing biases constrain the development of healthy and creative persons who are free to actualize their full individual potential. The essential contradictions between affiliative and achievement needs, expressive and instrumental functions, and private and public spheres of experience that exist in the stereotypic definition of masculinity and femininity were generally recognized as serious impediments to mental health.
