The acalyptrate Diptera with special reference to the Platystomatidae

Part of the book series: Monographiae Biologicae ((MOBI,volume 42))

Abstract

The acalyptrate Diptera comprise the superfamilies of the Schizophora (higher Diptera) other than the Muscoidea (calyptrate and pupiparous flies). Differing views have been expressed as to whether the acalyptrates form a natural (monophyletic) group or not, with perhaps a balance of opinion in the negative (see Hennig 1958, 1971; Griffiths 1972 for varying views). I therefore consider the acalyptrates to be only a loose, convenient collection of superfamilies.
