Abstract
The primitive angiosperms are an assemblage of relictual plants considered to be representative of the earliest flowering plants (Stebbins 1974). These living fossils are distributed throughout the temperate and tropical regions of the world (Takhtajan 1969); an exceptionally large number of extant primitive angiosperms are concentrated in New Guinea, New Caledonia and NE Australia (Thorne, 1965, 1969).
