Abstract

The diagnosis of cancer constitutes a psychological crisis for the patient (1) Patients with cancer frequently report increased levels of anxiety, depression, anger and guilt. In addition, they are faced with overwhelming feelings of loss due to disappearance of good health, the possibility of death and loss of control, self-esteem, employment and social status. Patients with cancer are stigmatised by society: the word and the disease cancer have profound impact and evoke powerful emotional reactions. The myth that cancer is contabious (2) is still persistent and further isolates many patients.
