Abstract

Since the middle 1960’s, significant advances have been made in the study of natural products from marine algae (Moore 1978; Aubert 1979; Glombitza 1979). A number of compounds isolated from marine algae have been shown to possess some antimicrobial activities, but so far, none seems to have reached the stage of clinical trials, partly due to their toxicity or to their failure to show activity in vivo (Fenical 1979; McConnell & Fenical 1979; Michanek 1979). In order to search for compounds having clinical potential, many groups have screened a large variety of marine algae (Shaw et al. 1974; Caccamese & Azzolina 1979; Keiichi 1979; Caccamese et al. 1980, 1981)
