Including the Physician in Healer-Centered Research: Retrospect and Prospect

  • Chapter
Physicians of Western Medicine

Part of the book series: Culture, Illness and Healing ((CIHE,volume 6))

Abstract

The study of healers, the healing process and healers’ transactions with their clients are central foci in cross-cultural research leading to understanding of the role of medical systems in health maintenance. Healers in traditional, small societies have been studied by anthropologists in considerable detail (e.g., Turner 1967; Levi- Strauss 1967a). However, it is remarkable that anthropology has heretofore largely ignored the healer of Western Biomedicine, the physician. This paper examines recent studies of Western physicians which compliment those included in this volume. It examines forces external to anthropology which give direction to such studies, the challenges for anthropologists engaged in field research on physicians, and some theoretical perspectives and research foci which have guided research on physicians to date.
