Abstract
A hazard can be defined as the inherent property of a system that could cause injury or damage. Risk is the chance that an event happens which demonstrates these harmful properties. In other words, risk is a measure of probability of harm occurring in a certain period of time. This paper considers the assessment of hazard and risk with particular examples from the oil, gas and petrochemical industries.
Dr Cameron Ramsay now of Technica, Consulting Scientists and Engineers, Aberdeen, was the Principal Scientist at Cremer and Warner Scotland at the time of writing.
