Spatially-Oriented Energy Consumption Scenarios: Method and Application to Holland

  • Chapter
Geographical Dimensions of Energy

Part of the book series: The GeoJournal Library ((GEJL,volume 5))

Abstract

This chapter aims at providing insight into the contents and use of spatially-oriented energy scenarios. First, a brief review of types of energy scenarios will be given, with a specific emphasis on geographical aspects. Then a general class of energy models (the so-called MEDEE-models) will be discussed which have been designed in Europe in order to provide a systematic and comprehensive computer-based picture of all relevant behavioral modules in energy consumption. Next, an adjustment of this general model for specific Dutch conditions (e.g., transportation, housing, agriculture) will be made. Particular attention will be paid to spatial dimensions of this model (urbanized areas versus rural areas, etc.). Finally, a series of scenarios for economic development and energy use in the Netherlands will be presented. The consequences of these scenarios will be assessed by employing the above mentioned adjusted MEDEE-model. Various empirical results will be presented in order to illustrate the mechanism of this scenario analysis and energy modeling.
