Abstract
Features of the desorption induced by resonant laser-adsorbate vibrational interaction on ionic crystal, semiconductor and metal surfaces are reviewed. The description of the multiphoton excitation process is founded on quantum level schemes and stepwise incoherent transitions. Rate equations express the basic mechanism and relate the desorption rate and yield to the intensity, the duration of the laser-surface interaction, and to spectral and thermal properties of the adsorption system. The potential of adsorbate photochemistry induced by monochromatic infrared pulses of tunable lasers in combination with high resolution linear infrared spectroscopy is indicated for a one-component adsorbate with several phases within a single monolayer.
