Abstract
The IR excess can be used to study the density or velocity structure in the lower parts of the winds of early type stars. The depth of the emitting region and the excess in magnitudes is given for typical O-stars, as a function of λ and Ṁ. The first results of an ongoing study of the IRAS data are discussed briefly.
