Abstract

This paper reviews most of the experimental work carried out in Brazil on foliar fertilization of several crops, especially coffee.

Coffee leaves take up efficiently: N (from urea), P (from simple superphosphate and ammonium phosphates), K (as chloride, nitrate and sulfate), S (as sulfate), Cu (as sulfate), and Zn (as sulfate, nitrate, chloride and chelate). Boron is also absorbed but does not show large transport. Absorption of other nutrients has not been studied. Multinutrient sprays can serve as a complement to soil applications.

Beans can benefit from foliar applications of N, P and K when grown during the dry season.

Absorption of P by rice leaves is faster than root uptake.

Present consumption of foliar fertilizers (especially NPK or NPK + micronutrients) amounts to about 7 thousand tons per year.

There is a definite need for research especially with multinutrient solutions.
