Abstract
Net photosynthesis of branches of Calluna vulgaris (L.) Hull was measured in a perspex assimilation chamber (1.4 × 10–2 m3) under controlled conditions. Photosynthesis varied throughout the year. The highest rates of photosynthesis are reached between half of July and end of August. The rates are much higher and the light compensation points lower than data reported on literature. The photosynthetic response to temperature shows an optimum curve, that changes throughout the year. At low irradiance the optimum is reached at lower temperature than at high irradiance. Partial defoliation results in increase of net photosynthesis in the remaining leaves. This effect disappears within five days.
