Abstract

A carcinoma found between the hypopharynx and the gastroesophageal junction is defined by us as carcinoma of the esophagus. Carcinoma of the upper esophagus includes those tumors affecting the hypopharynx, cervical esophagus, and the superior mediastinal segment. The hypopharynx lies below the oropharynx and comprises the piriform fossae, posterior pharyngeal wall, and post-cricoid region. The cervical esophagus extends from the cricopharyngeus to the suprasternal notch (C6 to Dl), and the superior mediastinal segment is between the suprasternal notch to the upper border of the aortic arch (Dl to D4). Carcinoma of the upper esophagus, thus defined, accounts for only 16.2% (354/2182) of carcinoma of esophagus managed in our department.
