The use in animals of drugs licensed for human use: the situation in Sweden

  • Chapter
Comparative Veterinary Pharmacology, Toxicology and Theraphy

Abstract

Use of human drugs in the treatment of animals was studied by means of a cross-sectional prescription survey. Human drugs were primarily prescribed to small animals. Dogs in particular received a great variety of human drugs. The most frequent prescribing of human drugs occurred in the chemotherapeutics group, but drugs from all pharmacological groups were used in animal treatment. Some human drugs are more often prescribed for animals than for people. Availability of substances, more suitable formulations and strengths and manufacturer preference were considered important factors in choosing human drugs in the treatment of animals.
