Abstract

This study is concerned with the application of heat-shrinkable plastics tubing and mouldings as terminations for medium-and high-voltage power cables in replacement of traditional cable termination systems. The first installations were at low voltages (240–440 V) in weather-protected situations: as the product range was extended to include outdoor situations and then high voltages (11–33kV) increasingly demanding specifications had to be met. The study describes the requirements and traces the development of products to meet them. The test methods used to evaluate long-term service in polluted atmospheric situations are also described.
