The Reception of the Theory of Relativity in Russia and the USSR

  • Chapter
The Comparative Reception of Relativity

Part of the book series: Boston Studies in the Philosophy of Science ((BSPS,volume 103))

Abstract

The creation and confirmation of the theory of relativity was one of the main events of the revolution in the natural sciences in the first third of the 20th century. The revolutionary process is not only an act of scientific discovery which is fixed in one or a series of publications. It is also a process of the reception and assimilation of discovery which unfolds in the “space” of the entire scientific community and stretches over years and even decades. Science in its essence is international. But the “internationalization” of scientific ideas and theories which arise in one or several countries is at times a complex and lengthy phenomenon. The study of such a kind of phenomenon at once clarifies the condition of science in an individual country, and the peculiarities of its scientific and cultural development.
